Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation | Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation Shines at the 10th Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest – Wins Second Prize!

The Final Round of the 10th Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest 2025 was successfully held on May 10, 2025, at the Jiang Zhen Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Initiated and organized by Xiamen University, the Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest is a prestigious and influential event in the field of higher education, drawing participants from universities across Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and beyond. This year, the competition gathered 30 outstanding contestants from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China, Singapore, and the United States, all of whom demonstrated exceptional language proficiency and professional caliber in a highly competitive and captivating contest.

Among them, Chih-Chia Chen, a second-year master’s student from NCUE’s Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation, delivered an outstanding performance and stood out from the fierce competition, earning the Second Prize in the final round. Under high pressure and rapidly changing topics, Chen impressed the judges with calm stage presence, adaptability, and excellent interpretation skills—fully showcasing the institute’s strong foundation in translation education and talent cultivation.

This year’s finals were centered on the theme “Digital Society” and consisted of three main components: Keynote interpreting, conference interpreting, and dialogue interpreting. The final round featured a unique segment—Human-AI Interpreting Challenge (PK Round)—where contestants were required to provide simultaneous interpretation for both Chinese and English speakers in real time, alongside AI. This segment tested interpreters’ ability to handle cultural nuances, speaker challenges, and pragmatic subtleties, putting their on-the-spot judgment and professional skills to the ultimate test.

Chen’s success would not have been possible without the dedicated guidance and support of Professors Feng-Lan Chang, Zi-Ying Li, and Ting-Hui Wen. Throughout the preparation process, the instructors provided rigorous training, simulated practice sessions, individualized feedback, and psychological support—ensuring students were fully prepared to perform under intense competition pressure. This achievement not only reflects Chih-Chia Chen’s personal excellence, but also represents the collaborative efforts of faculty and students and the educational strength of NCUE’s Graduate Institute of Translation. It is a moment of pride for both the individual and the institution. We look forward to seeing more talented students shine on international stages and continue to showcase the professionalism and brilliance of Taiwan’s next generation of interpreters!
